Individually Crafted Internship

The individually crafted internship at a host organization is the main focus of the NPOP program (July 21 to August 24, 2000). The Program also embodies the following key components that foster a mutually beneficial internship for all parties involved.

1) Training Sessions
The NPOP 2000 will begin with JUCEEfs three-day intensive training sessions in Japan. The training will include:
  • Japanese society lectures.
  • Language and intercultural communication.
  • Lectures and discussions on the Japanese nonprofit sector and its current obstacles and achievements.
Last year, NPOP was fortunate to have experienced professionals in the field participate in the training. Lecturers included Mr. Yasushi Akashi, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Mr. Akira Matsubara, Executive Director of Cfs, who played a major role in the establishment of the 1998 NPO Law, and Ms. Emiko Nagasawa, Social Affairs Bureau, Keidanren.

2) Internship
Each intern will be placed at a host organization located in the Kansai or Tokyo areas for a six-week internship. The intern and his or her host organization will develop the content of the internship with JUCEE facilitation.

3) Optional Friday Research Days

Interns may use Fridays for personal research, social issue networking and/or personal development.

4) Internship Exchange Day
Each intern will have the opportunity to visit other internsf host organizations to gain a broader view of the different types of nonprofits and social issues in Japan.

5) Weekend Trip
Interns will have the option to participate in a three day trip to Hiroshima, learning about its history and the social movements that have mobilized since World War II.

6) Public Forum
The Public Forum will conclude the internship experience. The Forum will allow JUCEE participants to report about their experiences and make suggestions regarding how to continue the pursuit of creating a sustainable global nonprofit community. Please refer to the last yearfs public forum, gThatfs Bizarre!,h in the JUCEE Events section.

7) Other
JUCEE will monitor internships in order to reevaluate expectations of the interns and their host organizations and confirm that the internship is running smoothly. JUCEE staff are always available for consultation throughout the internship period.
