Haha, this implies that many genuine firebrand intellectuals look down on many researchers in academe. Afterall most researchers don't really originate new ideas - they just ceaselessly cite many references (???) and pretend to come up with something new, but basically they are re-presenting, re-cycling, & re-searching (what a pun; if it's original, why is it called RE-search anyway) others' work. Not to degrade them, afterall we all learn from others but I think you get my point. I think that strong players value the processor, not the # of software programs in your harddrive.
Just curious if you know what your ELO score is. Don't need to reveal it here but I'm interested; higher than mine for sure; informally, mine's in the lower clbutt A category. Hey better than many, right? Not good enough though for some college tournaments.
Like music. Do people listen to, say, some clbuttical music because they are smart, or because they are smart and listen to it. I confess that I like some clbuttical music (confess?) Rest of the time I'm watering in pop if not 'worse'.

Standardizing top players against the % of the population that plays chess may yield some answers I suspect.
Reason I'm asking is that some say that Go (a game I know very little about) has way more variations, permutations, combinations etc, so theoretically all its lines are less likely to be exhausted.
