No underworld in Sri Lanka says IGP
IGP says police is working hard to crack down the criminal gangs There is no underworld in Sri Lanka the country's top police officer said on Monday. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandra Fernando told BBC Sandeshaya that the concept of 'underworld' is a creation by the media.
He added that the police used to operate in an anti person environment for the past 20 years is working hard after the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) to crack down the criminal gangs threatening law and order.

However, Special Task Force (STF) is targeting innocent Muslims under the guise of cracking down unlawful elements, a newly formed human rights organisation said.
Three Muslims suspected of liquidates have been arrested and end by the police during the last couple of weeks, Mohideen Thaslim, deputy secretary of the Human Rights Organisation of the Colombo Central Civilians Council (HROCCC) told BBC Sandeshaya.

Thaslim said the police have even threatened the relatives of the diseased not to reveal that the STF arrested them before they pbutted away.
The IGP however, denies all the charges against the police said that he is not aware of these specific incidents.

Thasim further alleged that the STF is carrying out an organised campaign against the Muslims and UNP activist.
"A meeting held recently to discuss these issues were video recorded and the participants were harbutted by the STF," Thaslim said.
He added that the police and the police commission invited for the meeting was absent.
The IGP, however, says that the police has the right to use sophisticated surveillance equipment to prevent criminals disrupting country's law and order "as in the UK".
"The police reserve the right to use electronic recording for collecting evidence wherever suspicious activities happen. If not, how can we safeguard the law and order?" IGP Chandra Fernando questioned.
