When was JUCEE founded?
JUCEE was born when its vision to create nonprofit connections between people working on issues of common concern across the Pacific was funded by the United States Information Agency (USIA) in 1995. In February 1996, with this funding, JUCEE launched its first program, Japan-U.S. Nonprofit Internship Program, under the umbrella of the diverse activities of the Japan Pacific Resource Network (JPRN).

In March 1997, JUCEE became an independent nonprofit corporation in California and received 501c3 tax-exempt status nine months later. Today JUCEE houses three programs designed to fulfil the mission of bringing individuals and organizations together to work collaboratively on issues of common concern.

Does JUCEE accept donations?
Yes, JUCEE is grateful to our individual and corporate sponsors including Northwest Airlines and All Nippon Airways.

Why does JUCEE have offices in Tokyo, Japan and Oakland, California, U.S.?

The precise matching of organization to organization (Fellowships Creating Partnerships Program) and the interest fit between intern and organization (Nichibei Pathfinding Opportunity Program and Japan-U.S. Nonprofit Internship Program) happens because JUCEE is physically present and knowledgeable about the nonprofit sector in each country. The resulting high quality JUCEE program is also due to the bilingual/bicultural knowledge that is at the foundation of the organization, as well as our knowledge of the social, economic, and political histories surrounding the nonprofit sectors in the U.S. and Japan.

Why does JUCEE think it is important to bridge the U.S. and Japanese nonprofit sectors through nonprofit exchange programs and nonprofit collaborations?

Without an international outlook, nonprofit work will become increasingly more difficult and ineffective. JUCEE exists to bridge areas that have traditionally hampered international nonprofit connections. JUCEE facilitates collaborations, internships and exchanges among nonprofit organizations, a sector of society that has participated less frequently in global networking.

How does JUCEE ensure quality programs?

To ensure quality programs and outcomes, JUCEE designs and implements training sessions for all its programs, provides ongoing support for participating interns and organizations to successfully work in multicultural environments, and supports a network of program alumni, host organizations and JUCEE partner organizations.

Training encompasses language and culture training, workshops on U.S. and Japanese society, culture, nonprofit sectors, nonprofit management including outreach and fundraising. Contemporary, cutting-edge perspectives on current issues facing the nonprofit community during the training are covered by JUCEE's specially selected speakers who are actively engaged in their communities and the nonprofit sector.

Because JUCEE's work is building community, each program participant becomes part of our network. JUCEE recognizes the power of community to support individuals and toward this end we provide participants with follow-up workshops and events. In Japan and the U.S., program alumni listservs have been created. Not only do they allow participants to share information, they empower participants to voice their insights publicly while working toward creating and changing social realities especially within the newly developing Japanese nonprofit sector.

Who participates in JUCEE's programs?

JUCEE's programs are designed to build a community of nonprofit leaders both in the U.S. and Japan and create a community of organizations that work collaboratively across national boundaries.

Program participants include:

ŠE Individuals and organizations who share JUCEE's mission to promote a global participatory society through U.S.-Japan bilateral relations.
ŠE Staff members and volunteers at nonprofit organizations working within a variety of issue areas and who wish to extend their networks and strengthen their understandings of their issue areas beyond national boundaries.
ŠE U.S. and Japanese organizations who realize the importance of international collaboration.
ŠE Individuals working in the government and private sectors who wish to work with members of nonprofit communities to extend their networks, support their causes and share resources.
