Public Education Events
As part of its commitment to public education and the dissemination
and sharing of information on the nonprofit sectors in Japan
and the U.S.,JUCEE sponsors educational programs in Japan and
the U.S.Through these public events,JUCEE provides opportunities
for participants and the audience to engage in a dynamic dialogue
and to educate and learn from each other.

"U.S.-Japan Nonprofit Collaboration -
A Global Perspective"
Forum in Oakland, CA co-sponsored with
the Japan Society of Northern California and the World Affairs
Council of Northern California on October 30, 2000
Forum in Washington, D.C. co-sponsored with the National Association
of Japan-America Societies and the Mansfield Center for Pacific
Affairs on November 1, 2000
These forums highlighted the importance of international collaboration
between U.S. and Japanese nonprofit organizations. Keynote speakers
put into context the challenges that globalization and other
issues facing nonprofit organization face and the need to build
effective civil society networks to begin tackling problems
in a coordinated fashion. U.S. and Japanese organizations participating
in the Fellowships Creating Partnerships program (3 U.S. and
5 Japanese organizations) presented at breakout sessions on
Emergency Relief & International Development, Seniors & Computer
Technology, Children's Voices in the Media & Children's Rights,
and Immigrant Labor & Immigrants' Rights. Approximately eighty
people attended the Oakland forum and sixty attended the Forum
in Washington, D.C. at the National Press Club. |

"Collapsed
Classrooms: Disorder, Discipline and New Directions in Japanese
and U.S. Education"
Joint Event with the Japan Society of Northern California and
World Affairs Council of Northern California on March 24, 1999
This event is important because it addressed Japanese stereotypes
and brought Bay Area audiences closer to Japan by calling attention
to common societal problems in both Japan and the U.S. The
panelists
selected for participation in this event were JUCEE's own interns
who were active in the educational arena in Japan; representing
the U.S. were two Oakland high school teachers involved in
a
World Affairs' program designed to support Japanese education
in the U.S. Approximately seventy people attended this event.

"Green
Links: Collaboration between Environmental NGOs in Japan and
California"
Joint Event with the Japan Society of Northern California
on August 13, 1998
This panel discussion brought together six innovative environmentalists,
three each from Japan and the Bay Area, to explore how Japanese
and U.S. nonprofit organizations involved in a broad spectrum
of regional and international concerns work jointly to address
common missions and learn from each other's experiences. Panelists
shared their successes and failures in implementing their campaigns
and programs and together came up with creative ways in which
to pursue further bilateral collaborations. Approximately fifty
people participated in this event.

Public Forum
August 26, 2000
Kobe, Japan
The capstone event for NPOP 2000 was the Public Forum was held
on August 26 in Kobe, Japan. Five years after the Kobe earthquake,
JUCEE took this opportunity to present the nonprofit sector
in Japan, highlighting our host organizations in the Kansai
area and providing a forum for NPOP participants and hosts to
examine local issues on a global level. For more information

Event with the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership
on June 19, 1999
With an audience of nearly 300 people, and extensive media coverage,
this event increased the awareness of the nonprofit sector throughout
Japan. Participants included JUCEE's interns from the Nichibei
Pathfinding Opportunities Program. The event stimulated lively
debates over the social values of volunteerism in the U.S. and
Japan and there was an exchange of ideas between NPOP participants
and the audience on the differences and similarities between
the nonprofit sectors in Japan and the U.S. |

Forum Program
June 28, 1997
This public forum dealing with the nonprofit sector in Japan
and the U.S. was one of the first of its kind in Japan. Participants
included program interns on JUCEE's pilot program (presently,
Nichibei Pathfinding Opportunities Program) and former JUCEE
alumni from the Japan-U.S. Nonprofit Internship Program. In
addition to providing an understanding of the U.S. nonprofit
system through the experiences of JUCEE interns, the forum also
helped deepen the public 's understanding and perceptions of
"nonprofits," "volunteers," and "internships." Approximately
130 people attended this event.
